Configuring Line Object Type (KB-AP015)
A GIS line object can be displayed two ways in vGIS - as 3D pipes or flat lines. 3D pipes work the best for pipe networks, wires, and cables, while flat lines are best suited for displaying objects such as curb outlines or sidewalks. You can define the appearance of line objects in the vGIS Admin Portal, choosing either Pipe or Line in the Object Subtype field.
Pipe: a pipe will appear in the vGIS app as a 3D cylinder object. There are two object configuration settings:
- Default Diameter: sets the diameter of the pipe. You can also choose a unit of measurement from the drop-down box adjacent to the Default Diameter value field.
- Diameter Field: sets dynamic (object-specific) values for the pipe based on one of its attributes. Use the sample data at the bottom of the page to find the diameter value field. Next, select the unit of measurement that your data source uses. Check the Invert checkbox if attribute values need to be inverted (multiplied by -1).
Line: a line will appear as a flat 2D object, similar to an area object, in the vGIS AR environment. There are four object configuration settings for the Line sub-type:
- Default Height: sets the default height for the line. If this value is zero, the line will appear flat. Positive numbers extrude the line upwards and negative downwards. Adding values to this field will make the line look like a rectangular duct. You can change a unit of measurement from the drop-down box adjacent to the Default Height value field.
- Height Field: sets the line height dynamically. It can be mapped by selecting the appropriate field from the drop-down box. Use the sample data at the bottom of the page to find the height value field. Next, select the unit of measurement that your data source uses. Check the Invert checkbox if attribute values need to be inverted (multiplied by -1).
- Default Width: sets the default width of the line. You also choose a unit of measurement from the drop-down box adjacent to the Default Width value field.
- Width Field: sets the line width dynamically. It can be mapped by selecting the appropriate field from the drop-down box. Use the sample data at the bottom of the page to help find the width value field. Next, select the unit of measurement that your data source uses. Check the Invert checkbox if attribute values need to be inverted (multiplied by -1).
Infocard Image: sets the picture that will be displayed in the object's infocard within the vGIS app. The image can be selected from a range of preset images or uploaded from your library.
Enabling the display at calibration toggle (in Additional Details) will make lines or pipes visible on the map during calibration.
Example
This image shows two different line sub-types configured differently:
- In blue, the Line sub-type has been selected displaying flat lines that represent the open drainage. They were placed slightly above the surface level using the default depth/elevation setting of 0.02m.
- In green, the Pipe sub-type has been selected displaying cylinders that represent the sewer pipes. They were placed below the surface at the depth assigned in the data set using the depth/elevation settings (ranging between -2m and -3m).
