AR Tools: Sketch and Measure (KB-AM020)
Overview
Sketch and Measure is a valuable Tool in AR that can help add more context to what you're trying to see in augmented reality. Users can apply sketches of lines, points, and polygons to create digital imagery that can be used to communicate to the team.
Application
To access the Sketch and Measure tool, remember to start in the AR view (tap the AR goggles, confirm your location and tap Next/Done).
Tap on the Tools menu and select Sketch and Measure.
When the tool is selected from vGIS AR, the interface will switch and you will see the following options from left to right:
- The Menu button (represented by three vertical dots)
- The Action Bar; Points, Line/Distance, or Area
- Step Tracker
- Accuracy Bubble (top-left, remember to verify position, and connection to GNSS if applicable).
The three-dotted menu button will open with a few options:
- Scene: Enable/ disable the visuals outside of your sketch to
- New: By default, users will open a new sketch, but can still be used to create a new entry in AR
- Open: Select a previously entered sketch, a new menu will appear on the left where you will see your previous records
- Save: A prompt will appear to confirm submission of a sketch into vGIS/ vSite
Attributes
Each Sketch selection has a tag in the middle of the screen that users can tap to open a menu for modifying attributes of the sketch. Each option will have the ability to change its description, as well as its digital appearance (color and shape). Offsets are also a valuable way to communicate "no dig zones" or any other boundary meant for the field.
Some differences between attributes are:
Points: Shapes available are points, spheres, cylinder, and pyramid square
Line/Distance: Ability to determine Total Length, and shapes include 10cm line, 10cm line, or pipe element
Area: Modify Total Area and only Polygon is the available shape.
Adding Points
To begin adding points, simply point the mobile device in the desired spot and confirm the location using the crosshairs, you can even stand directly above the desired spot and press the plus button to begin adding points. Once the point is set, you can adjust the offsets in real time using the Offset Slider on the right.
When the point is established, click Save and you can add more items afterwards
Adding Line/ Distance
Adding a Line/Distance element uses the same application as points, the difference is the initial add button will begin the line, then point your crosshairs to the desired location for the other end of this line. You can also change offsets on the fly using the slider. Specifically for the Lines option, you can add a line, an continue to add connecting lines, forming shapes or taking turns on the job site
Adding An Area
Similar to adding a line, you have to add multiple lines but the difference here is that the area in between your lines will be filled. In its attribute menu, you can customize the colour of this area, while also presetting the total area and shape.
Step/ Movement Tracker
This tracker feature will measure distance travelled and present the distance in real time to the user. Simply tap the button, and when ready tap Start before walking. After moving, tap Done to stop the step tracker.
